Learning to Love Yourself this Summer: A Therapist’s Guide to Seasonal Self-Compassion
Now that summer is here, longer days and warmer nights may bring feelings of expectation - the expectation to socialize, to look a certain way or to take advantage of time off, which for some may make summer feel more overwhelming. If you are one of those people who feel the weight of these expectations on your shoulders, this may be your time to check in with yourself and provide yourself more support and kindness, without feeling guilty or selfish for doing so.
Keep reading for some therapist-approved ways to reconnect with yourself this season:
Redefining Summer
You don’t have to have the perfect bikini body, a busy social life or a grand vacation to have a fulfilling summer. Your summer can be quiet and peaceful, or prioritizing your needs. Ask yourself, “What do I need from myself this summer?” Then allow yourself the space to follow these.
Speaking to Yourself
When you notice your inner critic becoming louder, connect with yourself by talking to yourself like you would talk to one of your loved ones. Give yourself grace and remember - it’s okay to rest and take care of yourself. The first step to self-love is changing your self-talk.
Enjoying the Small Things
You don’t need a grand vacation or a big event to recenter. Sometimes taking a pause to enjoy the small moments can go a long way. It may be taking a breath of fresh air, enjoying the sun, having more time for daylight. Let yourself notice these things that may bring you a sense of joy.
Protect Your Energy
It’s okay to honor your own needs - whether that means saying no, stepping away early, or choosing quiet moments over crowded ones. Boundaries aren’t selfish, they’re a way to practice self-protection. You deserve to feel grounded in your life.
You Are Enough
Remember, you don’t have to change a single thing to be deserving of love and belonging. You are already powerful, whole and worthy just as you are.
If summer feels heavy for you or if you’re struggling to reconnect with yourself, you don’t have to navigate this alone. We’re here to walk with you through every part of this journey. Reach out to start the first steps today.
