Mental Health Awareness Month: Practicing Self-Care

As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, one topic that tends to be talked about but not practiced often is self-care. In today's society, taking time for self-care is crucial in ensuring that you can be your overall best self. When we think of self-care, we think of either extravagant activities such as a spa day or vacation; or we think about basic physical and psychological needs such as bathing or eating a good meal. Though these things can absolutely be self-care, the idea of self-care also focuses on activities that can nurture your mind and body, giving you a reset to take on the twists and turns of life. Let's explore some practical and meaningful ways that you may be able to incorporate self-care in your everyday life:

Mindfulness

Being mindful may include participating in meditative exercises, reflecting on your thoughts and emotions or taking a moment to be present in your space. By incorporating a few minutes of mindfulness into your day, this can give you a chance to pause and recenter without having to take much time and energy.

Digital Detox

In our current world, it is very common for us to look to technology for some sort of stimulation. Doom scrolling has also become more popular over the past few years. It is important to set some time aside each day to unplug and disconnect whether it is reading a book, taking a walk, or simply enjoying moments of silence.

Connect with Loved Ones

Spending quality time with friends and family can be a great reset, as your loved ones can typically provide support and connection. Making time for activities that you can do with your support system can be a meaningful way to practice self-care.

Pursue Your Passions

Being able to do your hobbies and passions can bring you happiness. Whether it is art, music, gardening, or being outside, it is important to make time for things that are relaxing and fulfilling.

Eat Well, Sleep Well

Sleeping and eating well is essential for both physical and mental well-being. Eating a nourishing meal can ensure your body has what it needs. Additionally, having a solid routine for sleeping can be very helpful for all parts of your overall wellness. By doing these things, your body and mind will thank you!

Be Kind to Yourself

Sometimes, life can be difficult. Being kind to yourself is a great way to take care of your mental health. Acknowledging your achievements, while supporting yourself through potential setbacks is essential.

Self-care is vital in supporting and prioritizing all areas of wellness in your life. By incorporating these practices on a daily basis, you can work to cultivate a happier, healthier and more balanced lifestyle. Taking care of yourself is not selfish - it is crucial to take care of other aspects of your life. Remember, self-care is journey, not a destination.
